Dal Khichdi with Tadka Recipe

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1 cup dal
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 chopped tomato
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp chopped green chilies
  • 1 tbsp cumin zeera
  • 2 tbsp dhania powder
  • 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • A pinch of hing
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 whole red chili
  • Freshly chopped coriander leaves to garnish
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste
  • Ginger garlic paste


  • Soak dal and rice in freshwater for at least 20 minutes.
  • Then give it pressure in a pressure cooker and also add water, turmeric, and salt.
  • After 3 whistles of the cooker, open it up and mash the khichdi with whatever utensil you want.
  • Now to make the dressing, in a large pan fry the cumin seeds till crackling and then add hing, curry leaves, and chopped green chili and fry for a few minutes. Also, onion is basic at this point.
  • Then add the ginger-garlic paste and saute for a few minutes.
  • At this time add tomatoes to the pan and also add salt to prevent the tomatoes from burning.
  • Mix well after adding chili and coriander powder.
  • Whisk quite well with the spoon.
  • At this point in time, add a cup of water and the cooked tomato paste to the khichdi. Bring it to a boil, stir, and then set aside.
  • Now it's high time for tadka.
  • In a separate skillet, add all the same seasonings including cumin seeds, green chili, onion, and chili powder. Also, curry leaves are added. Saute it for a few minutes and then add this tadka in the khichdi. Mix well.
  • And there you have it. Serve hot in the serving dish.
